I just finished talking to Les Greevy, one of my fellow columnists at Shooting Sportsman magazine. Les does a great deal of work teaching 4H kids shotgunning. His favorite gun for kids in the age range of your daughters is the H&R “Pardner Youth” 28 gauge.
The H&R Pardner Youth is a single shot hammer gun with a 22″ cylinder bore barrel in 28 gauge. It has a sturdy and reliable transfer bar safety and a safe break-open single shot action. The stock is especially sized for young people with not only shorter length, but also a slimmer pistol grip. The guns really aren’t seen often in the US, but are very popular in Europe. Cost should be under $150. You can give Robin Sharpless, H&R’s VP of sales, a call at 978-632-9393 to locate a dealer who can get one.
Les is extremely enthusiastic about the gun for kids and feels that the combination of the 28 gauge and cylinder bore choke is ideal for learning.
