I have a double automatic from the 70’s with a skeet choke. Upon looking at the choke marking it is not a * * $ but a dollar sign with the vertical line about 20 degrees off (like a backslash through the S ( $ ** ) I couldn’t make an offset slash with the computer. I just assume it is a skeet barrel but someone made a mistake at the factory. Ever see one like that?
I’ve not seen a Browning choke marking like the one you describe. But, one thing’s for sure. Never trust a choke marking. The only way to know for sure what you have is to mike the choke. I can’t tell you how many factory chokes I’ve miked that didn’t come close to their inscribed designation.
