Trap And Skeet Coaches

Dear Technoid,

Can you provide a list of trap and skeet shooting coaches available in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas area?

Kerry

Dear Kerry,

Some shooting coaches travel the country giving clinics, while others tend to coach mostly at a home ground. Trap and skeet do not have quite the coaching tradition that sporting clays has developed, so you may have to poke around a little bit more. But they are there.

There are three sources I would use to find trap and skeet shooting coaches in your area:

1) contact the national governing bodies and ask them:

Trap: ATA, http://www.shootata.com

Skeet: NSSA/NSCA, http://www.nssa-nsca.org

2) read through the respective national organization’s monthly magazines. Copies should be laying around your gun club or shooting range. Most traveling coaches advertise. The Bender clinics are very popular for skeet shooters.

3) do an search on the Internet for “shotgun shooting schools.” For more advanced coaching, you want a coach who specializes in your game. But that may depend on the coach, as follows:

A long time ago I was coaching International Skeet out at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado and was surprised to see Kay Ohye out there for a week coaching bunker trap. Kay is a marvelous ATA-style trap coach, but really hadn’t done much bunker work. I asked him why he was here coaching a version of the sport he really didn’t deal with a lot and got a great answer. “I don’t know the bunker game real well, but I know how to teach them to see the birds”. Case closed and point well taken. Ohye is a great trap coach and he knew what mattered. In bunker, seeing the bird quickly and clearly is THE name of the game.

Between these three sources, you will certainly cover all the ground and unearth whatever coaches come to your area. I’d be happy to devote several hours of my time to do the research for you, but I don’t want to deprive you of all the fun.

Best regards,

Bruce Buck
