The Best Turkey Choke

Dear Technoid,

I plan to turkey hunt the end of this month (first time) with a Beretta AL391 12GA. It has a 28″ barrel. There are several extended tube (ported and unported) chokes on the market (the undertaker, mad-max etc) and I need some direction as to which choke may perform best with my gun without buying several and then patterning each and every one with various mfgr’s 3″ shells in #4’s & 5’s. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you!

Dear Jimmy,

Nope, I don’t have a suggestion. I haven’t tried all the turkey chokes or even most of them. I’d call up a few of the makers and ask them what kind of pattern percentages they will guarantee and with what shell. Don’ t buy from someone who won’t give you such a written money-back guarantee. That will cut through the smoke and silly names pretty fast. You ought to be able to get 90% performance from someone with some shell. Don’t let anyone give you the baloney that “We can’t guarantee specific performance because all guns are different.” The Beretta barrels are very consistent. If they are professionals, they know what you have and they know what it will do with their chokes. Once you get the choke, pattern it and send it back if it doesn’t do what they say.

My guess is that you may have a hard time getting a guarantee of a specific performance percentage, but it shouldn’t be so hard to get a money-back guarantee if it doesn’t perform the way you want. That way all you lose is time. If you can get money back guarantees, order chokes from a few different makers and pick the winner yourself. Briley has always had a reliable return policy. I’d call them up and ask them what they recommend, George Trulock makes some very nice chokes and guarantees their performance also,

There nothing easier. And you thought I was going to do all the work! I wouldn’t dream of depriving you of that fun.

Best regards,

Why does everyone think a turkey needs a 3inch shell and some kind of “super choke” to kill. I guess the one shot this spring that fell over stone dead (42 steps) from a 1oz load of 6 shot did not read the gun magazines. Old gun, L.C. Smith field model Full and Full. Their necks and head are not armor plated and a good shot to that area will do the trick. If you have a full choke with your gun
save your money. Pattern it and see.
