Beretta Auto Fixes


I walked into a local gun club, that happened to be an authorized Beretta dealer, and saw a brand-new 20 gauge Teknys on display. Although I already have a 20 gauge sporting clays gun, I just had to buy it. I tried it today on a skeet range and loved the feel of it. But, I do have two questions:

First, on two occasions today, I experienced this problem: I loaded two shells into the gun. I fired the first shell and it ejected properly. But then when I tried to fire the second, nothing happened. I found the unfired shell on the ground — it just popped out of the magazine and fell to the ground. A friend that I was with said that he occasionally had this problem with his 391 also. Ever experienced this? What’s the cure?

Second, I am a gun-cleaning maniac. You could perform surgery with components from my guns (unless, of course, G96 is toxic). After a day at the range, I like to remove the breech bolt assembly and clean it as part of my routine. I always did this with my Remington 1100 and never had a problem. I found the bolt very easy to remove and clean on the Teknys, but I almost had a nervous breakdown trying to put it back in. I just couldn’t get that link to seat properly. Is there a trick that you can share with me?

Any other advice you can share regarding the proper maintenance of this Beretta autoloader would also be greatly appreciated.

As to your new Teknys barfing up its second shell, I dunno. I’m not a gunsmith. I’m a gunwriter. The difference is that with a gunsmith there is some slight chance that he knows what he is doing. People have faith in gunsmiths because they do most of their experiments and mistakes in private in the back of the shop. Gunwriters seldom know what they are doing (trust me on that one) and people justly have little faith in them because they make all of their mistakes in public- very much in public. I’ve seen Beretta automagics eject their second shell once or twice, but it’s never been an issue on any of the Berettas I’ve fooled with so I never paid any attention to it.

Do you prefeed the second shell? Many Beretta owners prefeed the shell from the magazine onto the lifter plate under the bolt by depressing the little button at the rear of the shell lifter. They feel that this eliminates one mechanical process that can go wrong. It ought to work for you as a short term cure. Then spend some time figuring out what is really causing the problem.

Consider a burr on the shell stop in the magazine as the possible culprit. If the second shell is slightly delayed in its exit from the magazine, so that it leaves the magazine after the shell lifter has raised, it will indeed pop out onto the ground. Of course, it’s really hard for me to tell without seeing your gun in person.

As far as a surefire, 100% certain way of getting the bolt, carrier and link lined up for reinsertion- good luck! No one I’ve talked to, including some Beretta factory smiths, have a perfect solution. You just develop a “feel”. Everyone seems to hold the receiver in the vertical position, if that helps. If you are really having trouble, remove the trigger group. That always makes fussing with lining things up easier.

I always kept my 1100s clean or at least dripping wet with BreakFree CLP. They were quite reliable as long as you did one of the two. The Beretta autos will run for an unconscionable length of time without cleaning. You’d be amazed. Several thousand rounds of accumulated crud is nothing to them. They seem to carbon up to a certain point and then the build-up stops. That’s my excuse for not cleaning my Beretta autos and I’m sticking with it. If it ain’t broke…. Of course, perhaps that’s why my Beretta autos don’t seem to work well in the rain. I was sort of hoping that all the built up carbon would “protect” the mechanism from getting wet. Yeah… right!
